SF Sushi Rolling Party

The view from the roof of Forrest's apartment building.

On Saturday, June 3rd, Timber, Jenny, Rong, Shelly, and I went to Forrest's apartment in San Francisco for a sushi rolling party.  We have been to and hosted several sushi rolling parties before, and for this instance we brought water, soda, snacks, unagi, tuna, and other assorted goods for the sushi rolling party.

Since we live in San Jose we needed to drive north and pick up Shelly on the way.  Once we got to San Francisco we followed Forrest's directions until we got to his apartment.  As is typical in San Francisco there was no available parking in the immediate vicinity, so we unloaded the supplies from the car and then Jenny and Rong went to find parking while the rest of us (Timber, Shelly, and myself) went up to the apartment with the supplies.   We had to traverse 3 floors to get to Forrest's apartment.

Once we got up the stairs and into the apartment we were met with nothing.  We walked in to find that no one was around or near the entrace.  So we walked through the apartment until we finally found someone.  Forrest was actually on the roof trying to get the grill to work.  I went upstairs to provide assistance.  From the roof we had an amazing view of San Francisco.  We could see the ocean, Coit Tower, and the Transamerica building.

I wasn't the only one that went to the roof.  Timber, Shelly, Mary, and Johnnie also joined me up there.  As it turned out Forrest ran out of fuel so we had to use the oven to cook the rest of the food.

Unagi, Avacado, & Cucumbers oh my!

Once we got downstairs the sushi rolling began.  We got all the gear out, set up the table, unwrapped the supplies, and got rolling.  We started with basic rolls like the California Roll (avacado, cucumber, & imitation crab meat), and then worked our way into using salmon and tuna.  The first few batches were not really show quality but they sure tasted good.  As the night went on more and more people got to try their hand at sushi rolling.

As the party continued different types of foods emerged.  There was a green tea cake, stuffed chicken, asparagus and other assorted foods.

As I moved around the apartment talking to  people and helping with the prepation, I heard bells periodically.  As it turned out the cable cars go right by the apartment, and you can hear the bells well into the night.

As the evening wore on there was a break in the sushi rolling activity because we ran out of rice.  But more rice was made and the sushi rolling was started again.

At the very end Lisa and Svetlana tried their hands at sushi rolling.

Both Lisa and Svetlana performed admirably as they finished off the rice and some of the other critical supplies.  By the time they were done we were all well fed and content.

Our return to the car.

Once it had gotten fairly late and everyone had been well fed we decided that it was time to leave.  We said our goodbyes, walked down the three flights of stairs, and walked a few blocks back to the parking garage where we were parked.  We spend the majority of the drive home reflecting on our experiences at Forrest's sushi rolling party.
